NEW BUILD & REFURBISHMENT COMPLETED AT PEBBLEBROOK SCHOOL SEND 6TH FORM BLOCK

INTRODUCTION:

In January 2020 Alcema were appointed to complete the internal demolition, construction and refurbishment of the old 1960’s SEND 6th Form Block, together with external works to the area.

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

The project involved the design and erection of a façade retention system which was a complex full perimeter scaffolding designed to retain the complete building façade on all four sides of the building whilst the roof and all the internal floors and walls were demolished and replaced.

SCOPE OF WORKS:

• Construction of a 150m long temporary Haul road across sports pitches and crane bases
• Removal of all asbestos from the building
• Full internal demolition and removal of all floors, walls and the roof, leaving the complete external façade including windows in place.
• Casting New foundations through the existing floor slab
• Specialised Multi-storey steel structure with projecting bays manufactured to fit inside the existing façade that was being retained.
• Meeting Room Pods incorporated into the new design.
• Student kitchens and a teaching kitchen installed
• 6 new classrooms formed over the ground and first floors
• New life stills and student common rooms
• New DDA compliant lift was also incorporated into the new structure.
• New entrance to the building was designed and installed
• Two new staircases designed, manufactured and installed.
• Underfloor heating incorporated throughout the building.

The School remained live throughout the works and project was completed on time and within the constraints of Covid-19 pandemic.

6th form Students were involved with the construction of the building and were given regular tours to show the progress of the works. They were also involved with the setting up of each of the classrooms and common areas.
