Refurbishment of the longest continuous serving Dr's practice in the country
OVERVIEW
Refurbishment, extension and improvement works to one of the oldest GP practices in the country, to increase the overall service provision and meet the growing needs of the community.
SCOPE OF WORKS
Full refurbishment of the entire surgery including consultation rooms. Increased overall footprint of the practice building to circa 900m2 through construction of multi-storey extensions. External works to increase car parking provision and form a new entrance.
WHAT WE DID
Ground floor re-design to accommodate additional reception and waiting room space. Construction of new consultation rooms and treatment rooms plus a Minor Operations suite. Modernisation of all existing consultation and treatment rooms and installation of DDA compliant features to provide a total of 17 consultation rooms. Creation of new office area in previously under-utilised roof space.
Due to the scale of the works undertaken, a temporary surgery was erected to the rear of the main site allowing the practice to operate as normal throughout the project.
The project included structural integrity works and asbestos containment and removal. In addition, we installed a DDA compliant lift and formed a new staircase as part of the refurbishment.
LIVE ENVIRONMENT
Prior to works commencing we held a resident engagement meeting outlining the duration and nature of the works. We believe it is crucial to accommodate the needs of the local community and minimize the impact of our projects. Prior to specific activities, a letter drop was issued to all residents that could be affected, for example road closure to facilitate the deployment of a crane.
Due to the residential location of the surgery traffic management and logistics were key to delivering a successful project. Safe pedestrian access was also of paramount importance. A dedicated surgery entrance and walkway was established from the outset and maintained at all times, to ensure uninterrupted service provision and patient safety. This included clear signage and demarcation from the main site area. All deliveries and waste removals were managed on a just-in time basis.
OUTCOME
We worked very closely with the client to successfully deliver a surgery that meets the needs of the practice management team, GPs and its patients.
